I endorse writing endorsements

If someone does great work with or for you, do you take the time to endorse them? A well written endorsement can help the endorsee and the endorser.

Lets assume a co-worker kicks butt on a project with you. Sure you are likely to thank them, and maybe even tell their boss, but did you add it to their social networking profile? Thats where it can be of most value to them Fast forward 6 months and they are looking for a new job (through no fault of yours of course). Prospective employers are now likely to look at profiles of future employees. Your endorsement may help them get the job.

Has a vendor or supplier under-promised and over-delivered? In addition to paying that invoice on time, post an endorsement for them. Your endorsement could help them land new business and new business partners.

Quick guidelines:

A good endorsement should flow through you
Only write endorsements that are genuine
Recognize that endorsements will stay online for ALL to read. Keep em positive
Spell and grammar check your endorsement
Write them without expecting anything in return

Oh yeah, and a well written endorsement showcases the writer too. All sites (of which i am aware) provide a link to the endorsers profile. Endorsing others is a great way to earn exposure for yourself too.

Have you taken the time to endorse your suppliers, clients, friends and others who have helped you along your way?

What do you do when someone asks you to write an endorsement you would prefer not to write?

What do you do when someone asks you to write an endorsement? And you’ve never written one before, not that you prefer not to, just concern that you might not capture all of their great talent?

Don’t worry about capturing all of their great talent. It’s likely that you couldn’t possibly anyway.

    Here’s my advice:

Think about the person for 5 minutes.
    Write 3-4 sentences about them.
Read those sentences to see if you should add or delete anything.
4 sentences is almost too long, but you could get away with 5.
Find 3 other people to endorse while you’re in the mood.

    Thanks for asking.

    Terry
