#DNY Digital New You- 8 Reasons Why Social Sucks

This is part 1 and the flip side will be Why Social Rocks!


Quick disclaimer: I’ve been involved with social media LONG before it was called social media. I got on LinkedIn in 2004 before it had 1,000,000 users. Was on Facebook the day it opened to Grey Hairs and No Hairs like myself in 2006. I remember well the summer of 2008 when people thought Plurk may replace Twitter…so while the title of this post says “Why Social Sucks”, I too must suck a little for spending so much time on it. Okay? Thanks!

Now, on to why Social Sucks…

Too much noise– If you’ve ever tried to promote an event or an idea through Facebook you quickly realize how easy it is for people to “tune you out”. Truthfully, it’s not that they are even doing so…the amount of things happening every second on Facebook (or Twitter for that matter) does it for them.  As a “marketing channel” these tools are just a little blown out. Ha ha I said a little.

We broadcast instead of narrowcast– One of the best parts of marketing on the web is the ability to specifically target our audiences. Unfortunately, we still act like we can only send one message and HAVE to hit as many folks as possible with that.  This is more of a function of “lazy” than anything else.

Too many invites to crap you’d never attend– How many times have you been invited to an event that you’re clearly NOT the target audience for? Perhaps it was for a sport you’d never play, a restaurant opening you’d never attend or an event that takes place 2700 miles from home? It’s just easier to “select all” then it is to painstakingly go through and cherry pick the people you really mean to target. See? Lazy!!

Too many people starving for attention– There’s so much “look at me” and not in the good way. It would be almost acceptable if most of the cries for attention where “I’m awesome. Check me out!!”. Instead it’s “send prayers” or “you won’t believe what happened to me”. This really doesn’t have anything to do with the post. It’s more of a PSA than anything 😉

There are no real rules– Social is still the wild west and anything goes. Well maybe not anything, but certainly far too much. Think about the last time you scrolled through your Facebook Wall or Twitter stream and constantly said wow…amazing. Yeah. Right. I just scrolled through my entire twitter stream to find anything to RT. I went through 47 posts before finding anything worthy and honestly, it probably wasn’t but it did amplify a nice message from a friend.

No barrier to entry to call yourself a pro– Or an expert or a guru or anything else. Frankly, I’m uncomfortable when people call me a Social Media ****. I don’t purport to be one. I don’t “practice” my craft. I don’t really spend that much time studying it. AND NEITHER DO MOST PEOPLE. If you’re looking for a pro in social media, figure out how to become one. It’s not tough and your voice will be the only truly authentic one for your brand. If you really can’t do it, call me and we will figure it out together.

People consider doing social doing work– “Yeah it’s kinda work. Demented and sad, but work”. Alright, maybe I’m misquoting Johnny Bender from The Breakfast ClubIt’s very easy to get caught up in “updating statuses” or even worse…finding things to share. At the end of the day, most of this is far better for your ego than it is for your wallet. There are specific times when doing Social well pays dividends and we will get to those in Why Social Rocks!

The right platform still doesn’t exist- Linkedin is great for your Rolodex and is getting better with status updates, but far too many people still use it as a “set it and forget it” tool.  Facebook is far more fun and people still don’t really want others doing business there. Twitter is a hot mess that you get lost in the crowd before the word go. Google + started quickly and I think someone must have yelled FIRE really, really loud. What’s needed is a place where it’s comfortable to do business AND people actually spend time.

Authenticity vs. Getting it Done – A Case for the Social Media Call Center

When I started delivering the “9 Hard Fast Rules of Social Media” in 2008 Rule # 4 had a whole series on “Be Attitudes”. There were 9 of them like: “Be Engaging”, “Be Interested”. “Be Interesting”. “Be Helpful” and a few others. The one I really want to focus on today is “Be Authentic”. 

Social Media has long been about putting yourself out there and either starting or becoming a part of the conversation. Authenticity is a key as it really helps people connect with you. Enlightened individuals certainly understand and have knowledge of their authentic self. Those on the path toward enlightenment have a pretty good sense of their authenticity too. People who are less concerned with “who they are” tend to have a lower sense of self. That’s okay because this post really isn’t about people, It’s about companies.

In business we are just starting to wake up to the importance of “corporate culture”. Your company’s culture is its’ identity. Just like in individuals, the identity is what drives authenticity. 

When I say businesses are just “waking up” to this idea, I’m also saying that MOST have little idea as to what their culture really is. As such, they take on the identity of their leader at best, have a blend of identities or have an identity that is chaotic on the flip side. Authenticity from a business with multiple identities is similar to expecting consistency when following a twitter stream of someone suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder. It’s not gonna happen.

And time marches on.

How many businesses have been contemplating “getting into social media”? They’ve sent people to classes. Signed up for webinars. Hired younger people based on their answers to questions geared around social media and they’re still not doing it. Why? Because of three simple reasons:

1. They don’t have the understanding of how to merge these tools with their business objectives.

2. They don’t have the right people (a reflection of 1)

3. They don’t have the time

And time, marches on.

Those three reasons can be enough to have kept you from starting, but should they keep you on the sideline? No chance. Here’s the truth, getting started in social media is far more important than getting it right. If you don’t have the knowledge, people and or time, then maybe it’s time to look for a company who does.

I want my social media to go AKA Get a Smart Phone, Dummy

Social media is so hot because it allows us to stay connected to the world around us. This world involves not only our current business network, but family and friends as well as people we have yet to meet. From a business and job seeking perspective, these connections are priceless.

What’s even cooler is how many of the sites are so compatible with mobile technology. You are 100% missing out if you don’t have a smart phone. Get one. Get one now! I hear people say “I don’t want to be tethered to my phone” or “no one needs to be that connected”. That’s old world thinking. Dinosaurs are old world and you know how well things worked out for them.

What makes social media on the go so valuable is that we have moved fully into the now generation. They called gen X the instant gratification generation. As a senior delegate of that group I can tell you things moved slowly for us relative to what happens now.

Smart phones allow you to do status updates as they come to you. You can read and comment on others as well. Savvy users can actually check out real time conversations that are taking place about them, their brand, their competition or anything else that matters. This instant information wherever you are, whenever you are there is valuable. Couple that with the fact that you don’t have to log around your laptop and it becomes priceless.

You don’t have to get on the smart phone train because I said so. Don’t worry about the fact that in 2009 phone manufacturers produced more phones with a qwerty style keyboard than the traditional phone style.

If you want to see where business is heading, one only needs to look where the kids of today are. They are online on social media sites with their smart phones. Why, because it pays to be connected RIGHT NOW!

Using Status Updates Effectively

Status updates are simply the fastest, easiest way to let your network know what’s going on. The challenge is, so many of us are posting things that neither serve us or our network!

Think about it, does anyone really care if you’re “sitting on the patio”?. Of course they don’t. That is a line from a Verizon ad that exemplifies how useless Twitter can be, especially when used incorrectly. I would contend it’s Twitter’s own fault as they ask the wrong question: “what are you doing?” Linkedin and Facebook ask slightly better questions, but not much.

If that’s the wrong question, what are the right questions? While I’m not entirely sure there is one right question, I will submit that if you think about answering any of the following, you will serve yourself and your network better:

What value do you have to offer your network now?

What information can you share that your network needs?

What interesting links, quotes, or ideas would you like to share?

How can the project you are working on be a potential solution for others?

What is it that you love most about what you’re doing?

What type of people may benefit from what you’re doing now?

Can you make us laugh?

Can you make us think?

What exciting news happened in your day or with your business that you would like to share?

These are just questions that I ripped off the top of my head. You can see that they are value focused. That value should be for others and a little bit for you, too.

One last caveat about status updates. While going negative may yield some responses, think about the types you’re getting. Hopefully before you set out on your social media campaign you decided what you wanted to get from it. On that list should be the types of responses you want. It has been my experience that negative attracts negative. I will leave it to you to decide when you have had enough of that in your life.

5 things you need to know about Twitter

1. Don’t answer “what are you doing” on twitter. Think more along the lines of conversation starting, shining the light on others or sharing useful information.

2. Use the 150 characters for your bio effectively. Use a combination of keywords and a sentence about how you would like to be known.

3. Follow the leaders in your industry. And then follow their followers. Engage them in useful conversation and watch your follower list grow.

4. Add relevant tweets to your page before you start following a bunch of people. This is important because when they come to check you out, they will see what sort of value you have to offer.

5. Use twitter search or other tools to monitor conversations about you, your brand and other things that are important. This helps narrow the tweetstream to things that are relevant to you.
